Two stones, two distinct expressions of brilliance. The right choice begins with understanding how each one performs.
From across a room, moissanite and diamond can appear almost identical. Up close, their character separates them. Diamond is carbon. Moissanite is silicon carbide: a rare natural mineral now created almost entirely in laboratories for consistent colour and clarity. It is not a fake diamond, but a gemstone with its own visual language.
Brilliance, fire and restraint
The clearest difference is light. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond and more than twice its dispersion. In simple terms, it returns more rainbow flashes, known as fire. Diamond tends to read whiter and more restrained; moissanite feels brighter, more graphic and especially striking across pavé surfaces.
Neither effect is inherently superior. Choose diamond for a cooler, classic scintillation. Choose moissanite when high-impact brilliance is the point.
Made for everyday wear
Diamond is the hardest gemstone at 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite follows closely at 9.25, above sapphire and ruby. Both are highly resistant to scratching and suitable for pieces worn often. Moissanite is also heat-resistant and does not become permanently cloudy. Skin oils and residue may soften its shine, but careful cleaning restores it.
Moissanite vs lab-grown diamond
A lab-grown diamond is chemically and optically a diamond, produced above ground. Moissanite remains a different material. The practical choice is therefore less about authenticity than intention. A lab-grown diamond offers the traditional diamond appearance and grading structure. Moissanite offers more fire and a larger visual presence at a fraction of the price of a comparable diamond. Both have the durability required for daily jewellery.
Clarity and the DARKAI approach
VVS means “very, very slightly included”: any internal marks are difficult to see even at 10x magnification. DARKAI Fine uses VVS moissanite, hand-set in solid silver 925 in Vicenza, Italy. The pairing brings a high-jewellery intensity to chains, tennis pieces, earrings and bracelets designed for everyday wear. Every DARKAI Fine piece carries a lifetime warranty.
Care is simple: keep each piece separate, avoid harsh chemicals, and clean the stones with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Brilliance should feel effortless—and remain unmistakably its own.
