The Link Chain: A Guide to Length, Width and Presence

The Link Chain: A Guide to Length, Width and Presence

Dense, sculptural and instantly legible, the link chain is less an accessory than a line drawn across the body.

A Cuban link chain is built from tightly interlocking oval links, twisted and pressed flat so the chain rests smoothly against the chest. Also called a Miami Cuban, the style rose to prominence through Miami and hip-hop culture in the late twentieth century.

Its signature is density: close links, minimal gaps and a continuous, weighty surface.

A Prong chain uses a related interlocking construction but leaves less space between links and has a squared profile. A Figaro alternates short links with a longer one. The Cuban is recognized by its compact rhythm and flat profile.

Choosing the right length

Length determines where the chain enters the silhouette:

  • 16" / 40cm: high at the neck, with a sharp choker effect.
  • 18" / 45cm: at the collarbone; the most versatile everyday fit.
  • 20" / 50cm: just below the collarbone, clean over a T-shirt.
  • 22" / 55cm: on the upper chest, ideal beneath a shorter chain.
  • 24" / 60cm: at mid-chest, suited to pendants and statement layers.

For certainty, measure a chain you already wear and compare it with the DARKAI size guide.

Width sets the attitude

Between 6 and 10mm is the classic Cuban proportion: visible, substantial and still suited to daily wear. At 12mm and above, the chain becomes the focal point. A broader neck or chest can carry more width; a slimmer frame often benefits from a medium profile.

Gold, white or pavé

Gold brings the original warmth. A white finish feels cooler and more architectural. A pavé link covers the surface with individually set stones for continuous light. DARKAI’s Cuban Edge sharpens the profile of each link, translating the familiar form into a more precise, contemporary line.

How to wear it

Wear one 18" or 20" link chain over a plain neckline and let its geometry stand alone. For layering, separate chain lengths by at least 5cm so each line remains visible. Pair a finer Cuban or Prong with a pendant, or echo the finish at the wrist with a matching bracelet.

Quality is visible in the details: tight, even links; a secure clasp, ideally with a safety catch on heavier pieces; a stated plating thickness; and nickel-free metal for extended contact with skin.

DARKAI Cubans and Prongs chains are hand-finished in Vicenza, Italy, where the brand’s family has worked with gold since 1839. The result is an icon refined through proportion, finish and restraint.
